2011 GOAL

1. The Sedalia-Pettis County United Way has a proud tradition of over fifty years of service to Sedalia and Pettis County.  It was founded in order to provide the most cost-effective method of raising funds for the county's basic charitable organizations.  Our United Way accomplished this goal fifty years ago, and it continues to do so today.

2. We are separate and independent from United Way Worldwide.  The role of the International association has been to assist and serve local United Ways - not the other way around.  Our local United Way is completely autonomous.  We choose the agencies that will be a part of each fall's campaign.  We decide how much money each will receive.  These and all other decisions are made locally.

3. Dues paid to United Way Worldwide have been completely voluntary, and annually amount to just one per cent of the amount pledged in the campaign.  We have paid these dues in past years because in return we have received goods, services, and national publicity worth far more than the amount we paid.

4. The Board of Directors is the governing body of our local United Way.  Each Director is elected by Pettis County citizens at an  Annual Meeting. Our Board is a cross section of the community - teachers, lawyers, industry workers, government employees, large and small business owners, and retired people. They are the people who make the decisions regarding the operation of the Sedalia-Pettis County United Way.

5. Your local United Way is the original low budget operation.  It is run by volunteers who plan each fall's campaign, make policy, set goals, and budget funds.  The money you contribute to United Way is used to meet the needs of people in our community.  Only seven cents of every dollar you give goes to overhead costs.  That means that 93 per cent goes directly to our 24 agencies.

6. Our United Way has only one paid employee - Elle Wasson- our Executive Director.  Elle handles our accounting and correspondence, acts as liaison between our 24 agencies and the public, and assists our volunteer Board and Campaign team.  She works part time averaging 25 hours per week and earns a monthly wage.

7. In order to be accepted as an agency of the Sedalia-Pettis County United Way organizations annually submit financial statements, summaries of programs and other information to United Way's Budget Committee. The Hearings are held once a year in May. Each agency who applies for funding for the year must appear. The Committee is comprised of 20 to 25 members of the Board. They interview each agency representative. When they are accepted as a United Way agency they are held strictly accountable for the funds they receive.  They are required to submit quarterly reports with written documentation as to how the money they received was spent.  The agencies are accountable to United Way and United Way is accountable to everyone who makes a donation.

8. Many local businesses offer their employees the option of payroll deduction.  Please consider this option if it is available to you.

A small amount from each paycheck adds up to a significant gift.  And remember your gift will stay in our community to help those in need, and improve the quality of life for us all.

9.     The Mission of United Way is to increase the organized capacity of PEOPLE TO CARE FOR ONE ANOTHER.
